Lakeville North and Lakeville South line up along the baselines at Target Field for the national anthem

Every once in a while, a high school game turns into something players talk about for the rest of their lives. That was Wednesday, April 16, 2025, when Lakeville North and Lakeville South took the field in Downtown Minneapolis — not at a home diamond, but at Target Field, right after the Twins walked off the New York Mets.

The cross-town rivalry matchup was one of six regular season high school games hosted at Target Field in 2025. It’s the kind of series a lot of Minnesota baseball families hope becomes a tradition.

Quick recap: Lakeville North and Lakeville South played a regular season game on a big league diamond, taking the field at Target Field on Wednesday, April 16, 2025 following the Twins’ walk-off win over the Mets. Lakeville South won 10-0. Jeff Belzer’s is making the full photo gallery available to download for free.

Lakeville South Tops Lakeville North 10-0

An iconic matchup as it is, this one was extra special. The Cougars of Lakeville South handled the host Panthers of Lakeville North by a final score of 10-0.

The Twins gave the teams the full big league treatment, too — a public address announcer, Target Field’s videoboards, and the ballpark’s LED ring. For most of these players, it was the biggest stage they’d ever played on.

A Taste of the Big Leagues

Playing at Target Field has typically been reserved for teams that make a deep run — the MSHSL Prep Championship Series is played there each June. This series opened that door during the regular season instead, giving 12 programs a shot at the ballpark without needing a state tournament berth.

For a Lakeville North vs. Lakeville South game that already carries plenty of weight, the setting turned a conference matchup into a memory.
