Fall is here, fortunately for some, unfortunately for others. Some may appreciate the chill in the air and look forward to the snowy months that follow, and some may long for warm summer days. Although there may be differing opinions surrounding the season, we can all agree on one thing: fall is the time to ensure that your vehicle is winter-ready. October is Fall Car Care Month, a reminder for vehicle owners to mark off their maintenance checklists and make sure they have the safest ride possible in the unpredictable winter weather. Here at Jeff Belzer’s Auto Group, we are committed to helping you keep your vehicle in prime condition.

Your Winter-Ready Checklist:

  • Battery Check: A dead battery on a snowy morning? No one wants that. Ensure your battery is fully charged and the connections are corrosion-free.
  • Tire Inspection: Your tires need to be in top shape to get through the Minnesota snow and ice. Make sure that the tire pressure and tread depth are at safe levels recommended by your specific vehicle. If your tires are worn down, now is the time to replace them.
  • Brake Examination: The brake system is your vehicle’s most critical safety system. Get your brakes inspected to ensure they are ready for the winter season.
  • Coolant and Antifreeze: To prevent freezing in your engine, ensure your radiator is filled with the correct mixture of water and antifreeze.
  • Heater and Defroster Functionality: It is important to maintain visibility while winter driving, so make sure that the defroster is working properly. Also, check the heater so that you stay warm and cozy during your drive!
  • Windshield Wipers and Washer Fluid: Replace wiper blades if your windshield is not clear in one swipe without streaking. Fill up the windshield washer reservoir with freeze-resistant washer fluid.
  • Oil Change: Engine oil thickens when cold. Get an oil change to a type that performs better in freezing conditions, like 5W-30 or synthetic.
  • Emergency Kit: Equip your vehicle with an emergency kit. Include items such as a blanket, hat and gloves, first aid kit, a shovel, jumper cables, a flashlight, and extra batteries.

These are just a few of the critical steps to take to ensure your vehicle is winter-ready. Fall Car Care Month is the perfect opportunity to perform these necessary checks and services. While these steps can be performed by the average DIYer, some require a skilled technician.
